The majestic Kapaleeswarar Temple is located in Mylapore, Chennai and is regarded as the largest temple in the city. This is primarily due to its tall pyramid structure, known as the ‘Gopuram'. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva disguised as a peacock. From this beautiful legend was born the name of this area: myil (peacock) + oor (town) = Mylapore. Within the temple courtyard is the shrine of Goddess Parvati ensconced within the shade of the ancient Punnai tree . In addition, there are beautifully sculpted bronze figures of 63 saints who were devout worshippers of Lord Shiva.

Additional featuresThe Kapaleeswarar Temple hosts various festivals throughout the year.
* One of the most famous festivals that attracts thousands of devotees and tourists is the 10-day Brahmothsavam Festival . Held in the months of March-April, one of the highlights of the festival is the fifth day, when the deity is taken on a Silver Bull at night. On the seventh day, devotees contribute their might in pulling the chariot (the ‘rath') of the deity for the unique Car Festival. The eighth day is the most important, when the idols of the 63 saints are taken in a procession.
* The Float Festival in Jan-Feb is uniquely beautiful – the Temple tank is illuminated with hundreds of brilliant coloured lights and the deities are taken in a decorated raft (called ‘Theppam") on the waters of the tank.
* Those inclined towards music should attend the music programs organized during the Vasanta Utsavam (summer festival) held in May-June.
