 antiago, a boy living in Spain, leads a common life of travel through his trade of shepherding and entertains thoughts of marrying a merchant's daughter. One day, he has a dream in which a child tells him to go to the Egyptian pyramids, which will lead him to hidden treasure. He consults a gypsy to interpret his dream, who tells him that it is a dream in the language of the world, and he must go to the Pyramids. Santiago dismisses this and plans to continue on with his daily life. While he sits to read a book, an old man strikes up conversation with him. The old man reveals that he is Melchizedek, the King of Salem. The King tells Santiago that in exchange for one-tenth of his sheep, he'll tell him where to find the treasure. Santiago agrees and buys a ticket to Tangiers.
In Tangiers, Santiago is tricked by a thief and loses his money and possessions. Discouraged, he curses his fate. However, he is reminded of the old king and finds newfound resolve to continue his quest. In Tangiers, he works for a year with a crystal merchant, and after accumulating enough money, he travels to Egypt with a caravan. On his journey, he meets an Englishman who tells Santiago of an alchemist living in the Al-Fayoum Oasis who has discovered the Elixir of Life and can transform metal into gold.

Good: An interesting fable

This is a fabulous book and worth reading. I have personally read it a couple of times. A Fable about following one's dreams, this novel combines an atmosphere of medieval mysticism with the song of the desert. With this symbolic masterpiece, the author states that we should not avoid our destinies, and follow our dreams no matter how difficult or impossible it seems.

I always feared to follow my dream but after reading this book I really feel that following your dream will always payoffs. Dreams are part of our life and we always fear to follow them but if we get determine, so those dreams could become true and achievable. This is what Alchemist shows you. This book provides you the courage to follow your dreams.
I have read fewer books in my entire life but this I found best of them.

I love reading books on different topics. Also read many books on positive thinking, achieving life's goals but this one was really mesmerizing. One of my friends recommended me. Its been almost a year, I read this book. But I would definitely tell you while reading you don't feel anytime that it is boring at all. I read this book. I really surprised, while reading at the beginning I was just holding a book and reading and slowly it made me holding and completed with full excitement.
The boy, started his journey by leaving his place and started roaming in and around Spain for learning about the world / people. He wanted to become rich. He is very patient and task oriented.
He faced many challenges, troubles but finally succeeded. |
