Although the stories are somewhat outdated, very British (cucumber and sardine sandwiches?) and not politically correct to the point of being offensive (all "swarthy" men are suspicious), the Famous Five stories were a staple of my childhood. Three siblings and their cousin (and her dog!) solve mysteries and have great adventures together without adult supervision. Its all very innocent and very much every childs fantasy.
