Edakkal Caves in Wayanad Review Historic Edakkal caves are one of the best known tourist spot in the northern Kerala. Neolathical age remnants, especially on the walls of edakkal caves will last in your memories form ever.
I had a wonderful day at the edakkal caves of wayanad district recently. Apart from the fun I had with my friends while to get at the top of edakkal's, the trip was a knowledge capsule. Name itself points to the specialty of the spot.(it's a malayalam word!) Any way I will teach you some malayalam to get what it means. ‘Eda' is English equivalent of ‘gap' or ‘in between'. ‘Kall' is stone or ‘rock'. Together it points to the formation of this historic cave of Kerala – the rock in between two caves. Edakkal is located at a height of 1200m above sea level on Ambukutty Mala in Wayanad district. Nearby airport is Calicut karipur airport, from there you can get here by road,(you will have adventures time climbing the hairpin bends of wayanad).Keep some good spirit and energy along with your luggage to the spot. Even today I will the calmness I felt under my feet on the cool and smooth rocks of Edakkal. Danger is almost zero if you take a little care while getting to the caves. A small entry fee, that's all you are now entitled to explore and have best time at edakkal.
You have possibilities of humorous comparisons once you get in here, I will come to that. Site have enough proofs to show that theses where the settlements of tribes of Neolithic period. You can see various drawings and carvings (petro glyphs) of our ancestors inside the cave. If you have some percentage of Sherlock Holmes observation skills, you will see three genre of these carvings ( it points to three settlements happened at various stages of history). Human figures are given much importance in most of the drawings (some symbol like things in their hand and head!). But what attracted me the most was the lighting that was facilitated in the caves for a perfect stay for the people of those days (marvelous engineering!). Here comes the humorous part – I just compared modern luxurious villas to this stupendous cave – it is funny that you will prefer edakkal.
There is also religious importance for Edakkal caves at wayanad. Local people believe that these caves are related to the epic Ramayana. People believes that these caves were formed from the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha.Lave and Kusha are the sons of lord sree rama in Ramayana.
Even though mine was a one day trip you have attractive options for food and accommodation at wayand. Apart from Edakkal caves you can have visits to places like Kuruva deep. Pookod Lake, Plantations etc of wayanad. Leave your second thoughts to choose wayand as your next picnic spot – get that enchanting breeze blow over you for ever. We also had an adventurous hide n seek amidst the rocks at edakkal. So get ready for an adventurous hide n seek right here at edakkal.
