Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) Review
The third instalment in the series of underworld evolution saga that traces the origins of the war between the werewolves and the lycans has been released. The dark and foreboding mood of the franchise is carried out in this movie also and the emotional angle is better justified.
Lucian is a lycan who works for Viktor who is the king of vampires. Lucian is punished for transgression as he tries to save the humans from a werewolf attack and is condemned by Viktor. Viktors daughter, Sonja (Played by Rhona Mitra), helps him to escape and Lucian rebels against the vampires by joining with the lycans, and losing sonja in the battle.
More depth has been given to the development of characters and Viktor and Lucian are played extremely well by the lead actors, which gives the film the authenticity and credibility of justifying the animosity between two species which could exist only in fantasy. The climax looks similar to the big war sequences seen in Lord of the Rings, and is a highlight of the movie.
In conclusion, viewers expecting the awesome fight sequences and special effects seen in the first two movies would be disappointed, as the film lacks a long thrilling sequence, which can make us sit in the edge of our seats. The importance has been given to the story and character development, and it faithfully follows the same techniques, sets, and the prevalence of dark foreboding set in the previous sequels.
