This is the first John Grisham book I have read in a long time. It deals with a theme seen often in books, the big bad corporation which dumps chemical wastes inappropriately and causes cancer clusters in nearby communities. Two lawyers (a husband and wife team) take it upon themselves to represent a woman who lost both her husband and son to the disease. Against all odds, they win the case against the large corporation and the jury awards a huge settlement to their client. However, the corporations lawyers appeal the verdict.

Most of the book revolves around how the corporation proceeded to ensure that they were going to win the appeal. Their tactics made me angry and made me realize that "justice" can be bought if you have enough money. I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it.

The Appeal is set in Bowmore, Mississippi where Krane Chemical Co. has been dumping toxic waste into their water supply, causing a huge spike in cancer cases. A husband-and-wife legal team takes the company to court and after months of litigation, the win an award of 41 million dollars.

The chemical company is owned by Carl Trudeau who swears to never pay a dime of the award. Instead, he knows the state Supreme Court will decide the appeal and it looks like a close decision there, so he sets out to recruit his own Supreme Court justice. He handpicks a man to be his candidate in the upcoming judicial election and sets his sights on one of the courts liberal female judges. He intends to buy the reversal of the court judgment.

John Grishams novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Boston Globe saying, "The Appeal is an entertaining page-turner that, by showing readers a perversion of the system, yearns for justice. Who knew that the mega-best-selling Grisham wanted to be a moralist, a sort of Old Testament prophet fulminating against our sins? In The Appeal, he pulls that off beautifully."

I wanted to like this story, but I felt the good guy characters-particularly the attorneys -(the Paytons), were annoying. They were a little too perfect, a little too altruistic... It was very saccharine. The Paytons were both such Mary Sues I didnt identify with them at all. Ironically, I liked the antics of the evil villains more because at least their plots and plans were entertaining.

Overall this was a decent book, but I found the simplistic character development aggravating.
