Review: Matsya
Review By: Devi Menon    Review Date: 06 Jan 2009

Let me start with why Matsya??? a whole lot of curosity to visit an all veggie place coupled with a whole lot of people telling me its the finest veggie restraunt around. That was enough for me to tell my carnivorous self to take a humble visit to one of the most popular Udipi joint for veggie food, Matsya.

Reaching Matsya at around 1pm just in time for lunch, I was surprised that there were 4 families before me waiting to be seated. The bell door of Matsya rang as I entered and mentioned to the purser that we were a small group of 3. Our chance came fast and we were ushered into a lively, crowded interior bustling with loud voices and lot of activity.

Thinking that the meals and thali will be the only respite, I was surprised when an elaborate multi-cuisine all veggie menu was handed over to me.
My companions, both as carnivorous in nature as me ordered for south Indian thali and I browsed the menu deciding later to go North indian with some plain naan and channa masala
The others around us were busy devouring their South Indian thali and the looks of it indicated that it was quite filling. Surprisingly the couple seated beside us where all eyes at their plate and tucking the noodles. I could not resist my curiosity and I asked them to comment on the noodles. They said it was closest to the chinese noodles they had eaten
With a short wait, surprisingly my naan and channa came first to the table. The naan was tasty and hot while the channa masala, I must admit was a wee bit Udipish.
Meanwhile, the south indian thali priced at rs 125 was brought to our table. A complete stomach filler Beginning with the tomato soup, the thali has a couple of hot pooris. Then the rice followed with the sambhar, the poriyal (sabzi), rasam, a couple of gravies, raita, curd and butter milk
the thali was complete with the gulab jamun and vanilla ice cream
though the dishes may not be out of the world, the taste sure is! Please note that sharing of thali is strictly not allowed....yet I got to taste the sabzi and it was cooked well and tasted well

The highlight of Matsya is its south indian snacks- dosa, idli and specially the veg bonda. Looking extremely appetising and tasting out of the world, the bonda lures you from whichever corner of Chennai city you live in!

Whats more, Matsya is probably the only place that will serve hot idlis doused with tasty sambhar even at 12AM after your late night show

And yes, matsya has some tasty sundae and ice creams and also some hot badam milk that you can try, the many times you visit the place

Review: Step in for Authenticated Udipi Food
Review By: RajmiArun    Review Date: 16 Feb 2009

One of the best Udipi restaurant. With a seating capacity of 120 people, this Matsya in Egmore is sure to grab your attention, if you walk past the Police Commissioners office. Dont get carried away by the name. The name have come from the first avatar of Maha Vishnu, Machavatar - Matsya. The hotel though is advertised as Udipi hotel, it is a multicuisine Veg restaurant.

With no parking space, you are forced to park your vehicle just in the side roads. But you will find the ambience simply great and appealing once you step inside the restaurant. Go there at any time between 7.30am to 12 midnight, you will be treated to the chillness of Airconditioner always. Yes it is an AC restaurant.

What you get to eat here is something simply unbeleivable for the price you give. The rasa vadas are great starters. Soft vadas soaked in mint and coriander rasam. You can have the small balls of kuli appam and Manglore bondas before you start off with your full meal. These starters are the first course of the four course meal of the special Udipi thali served here. Then comes the thayir appam or the Manglore appam.

The second course is the two different kinds of dosas (you get that days special).

The third course is Bisibela bath, one of the mixed rice (either tamrind rice, or coconut rice or lemon rice) and curd rice. All these comes with choice of vegetable side dishes.

Then comes the deserts: fruits and nuts soaked in honey and Neer Dosa served with coconut and jaggery mix.

You will feel absolutely full and there is nothing more to compare than this. You also get north Indian and chinese food. But if you want Udipi meals then it is better to go for the Udipi special thali served here.
