Its not that great product for its price tag. Windows XP cannot be eliminated from most of our homes. What made the vista to suffer was its poor driver support facilities. People has to upgrade their machines in order to install this OS.
Ya, there are some advantages over this OS such as improved security, nice themes, aero visuals. Buts this is not enough to break the XP fame,.......

Personally, I dont like Windows Vista. I have Windows Vista in-built in my laptop but I dont use it. It takes much time. I really feel irritated using it. We have all been waiting for it to be in market but its performance is not good. I like open source products like Linux. It says there are lots of improvement as compare to Windows XP. But I think Windows XP is better than this. I have lots of difficulties in it. So I dont use it and would never recommend my friends.

Review: Windows Vista - The big flop from Microsoft family
Review By: sasidharakurup v r    Review Date: 16 Sep 2009

Windows Vista was the operating system which everyone was eagerly waiting. But Microsoft failed to impress its customers with the new operating system. Everyone who used Windows XP expected a better OS from Microsoft, but Vista was bundled with more graphics. So a normal user who was using XP gets irritated while using Vista because of its high graphics.
The main features of Vista was graphics and security. Vistas aero theme was the best theme in the windows family, but it uses a lot of memory. So a normal machine with Vista will be very slow. One cannot use multiple applications in a Vista machine. Vista has got good security features and regular security updates are also available in the Microsoft website. It is easy to configure the settings in control panel in a Vista machine than a Windows XP machine. Also the search option in start menu of Vista is a good utility.
The main drawback of Windows Vista is the booting time. It consumes a lot of time to boot the Windows Vista in a machine with low memory. Also it is difficult to use some high end applications in the Vista machine. Drivers for some applications and devices are not available for Windows Vista. So a normal user is compelled to rollback to Windows XP.
So in my opinion it is best to use Windows XP than using Windows Vista.

Microsoft Corporation has released number of Operating Systems as series of Windows. Windows Vista is the Operating System released by Microsoft Corporation in January 30, 2007 at Retail Market. Windows Vista was preceded by Windows XP, Windows XP is the one of the quit world wide popular Operating System of Microsoft. There are was various new features in this Windows Vista but it could not fulfill the expectation of the Microsoft. And very soon it was succeeded by Windows 7, which is the one of the good Operating System of Windows series.
Windows Vista came up with graphical user interface and visual styles which was a plus points for for the invent of Windows 7 too. Windows Vista has improved the state of security in the Windows operating system. And there was many more updates and latest feature in Windows Vista but it could not overcome the Windows XP. Recently we have got the news Microsoft no longer sells Windows Vista, though we will continue to support it, But it is still available from some retailers.

Microsoft have recently released their newest operating system , and when you start to use it you will certainly see the vast improvements made since the days of XP. On the other hand you may have read articles that express a negative slant on this updated platform, mainly for the reasons that not all software manufacturers at the time have updated their applications to run on Vista, or the price may be an issue, or some writers have compared it too Apple&rsquos current operating system &ldquoTiger&rdquo. Well first of all lets tackle the first hurdle of Software compatibility, Microsoft have released beta versions for software manufacturers to test and use for the purpose of allowing them to work on their own applications to make the necessary changes to their own software products, so if not all software has been available for this newest operating system then this really is not Microsoft&rsquos fault. Secondly the price has always been a bone of contention for some, well I guess if you are new to Microsoft then this could be pricey, but most of us generally only require an upgrade, or if we have to purchase a new PC then Vista will be included in the price, if you have built a PC then you can purchase a OEM (Ordinary Equipment Manufacturer) version which is very inexpensive. Thirdly comparing the newest operating system from Microsoft to Apple&rsquos current operating system &ldquoTiger&rdquo which is soon to be superseded in October 2007 with leopard is just plain ridiculous, for the obvious reason it is not a fair comparison. Now that we have the negatives out of the way let us concentrate on the positives, first of all spending some time viewing Vista Home Premium we see some very impressive features. First of all the main reason is that security is a whole lot better, all you need now is an antivirus software such as AVG free edition, the rest is kindly provided from Microsoft (Anti-spyware, Firewall, Phishing Filters, Windows Updates.) I was distinctly impressed with this security system and I felt much more protected when using internet explorer 7 on the internet. Included in this section we would like to emphasize the backup capabilities are very impressive and easy to use, although system restore is still there, it is still a much valued feature, however there are additional options in backup which is located in the control panel under system maintenance, you can backup to a network or CD, DVD, or Hard Disk, however you cannot backup to the hard disk that you are presently running your operating system on, so if you are using your C drive you would need to use a usb or firewire drive, or for example a D drive already installed in your pc. Secondly for those that want to perform a task and may not be absolutely sure how to go about that, there is a nice wizard feature that shows itself on startup, this is called the &ldquoWelcome Centre&rdquo which of course you can choose to disable if you want too. This wizard contains links that leads you to the desired destination to perform your task. The control panel is a more user friendly tool and contains a similar principle, whether that would be for example to change a desktop background, uninstall a program, change the screen resolution, set up an internet connection, install some wireless hardware, etc etc. Its much easier and a smoother operation especially as the windows help centre works hand in glove with these operations. Thirdly we come to the appearance, it has always been a big issue among dedicated users to want to tweak the system to give their own individuality to their workstation or home pc, certainly this can be achieved within this operating system, the desktop wallpapers are now much nicer compared to Windows XP, we have also what is known as the Aero Experience, in which you can have the glass effect, 3d icons, Flip 3D, better folder interface with viewing My Documents and new folders created by the user. Fourthly some important new updates with regard to media handling, in XP you could drag data to a blank CD and XP would keep it there until you were ready to burn it, which was a handy feature, but if you were using Movie Maker there was no way you could burn your movie to dvd, well now Vista can do this, a new application has been included &ldquoWindows DVD Maker&rdquo it has a wizard that guides you every step of the way either to create a slideshow or a movie complete with DVD Menus, and the preset templates included are very similar to idvd in ilife 06 in Apple&rsquos range of software. If you go to the folder that contains that say for instance pictures, you will see a bar of options as to what you can do with the selected pictures, there is a link to burn, if you select it you get a drop down menu as to whether you want to burn a Video DVD or slideshow. However each type of media changes the bar of options, as to what you can do. The fifth point which is worth noting and indeed makes the operating system unique, is when you view your images in your designated folder, you double click on the desired image, and select fix, you are taken to a windows media player type of interface this has a whole host of editing features such as : Colour Adjustment, Red Eye Reduction, Exposure Adjustment, Cropping, Auto Adjustment, Additionally as stated you can create a slideshow, you can assign ratings, tags or keywords, email, burn to cd or dvd. At the top it has a gallery link to view all your images as thumbnails. In conclusion this operating system in my opinion provides everything most normal PC users could need, although if you do advanced work with video, images, documents , etc then you would need to purchase more applications. This in my opinion brings all the basic operations under one package. It has addressed security as the most important issue that affects all Microsoft users, and they have been meticulous in this, so far so good. It has brought to the masses an efficient operating system beautifully presented.

Windows Vista is here at last. One of the largest software projects ever undertaken, Vista is indisputably a milestone&mdashdespite Microsofts having abandoned many of its most ambitious goals for the OS&mdashand not just for Microsoft but for the entire PC industry.Of course, Vista is not without its skeptics. PC makers say it will require more processing power, graphics capabilities, and memory than is typical of todays mainstream machines. Software vendors complain that Vistas vaunted security features are, in fact, locking them out. Users may wonder if it offers enough thats truly new to be worth the bother&mdashparticularly given that a number of Vista features and bundled applications are also available for Windows XP.

The vista was developed by Microsoft. It had been improvised when comparing with Windows XP,the vista will have a more configuaration i.e
Minimum 1GB RAM
and also having high equipment. The following features of Vista are
1)Acessibility:-Windows Vista includes built-in accessibility settings and programs that make it easier for you to see, hear, and use your computer. The accessibility settings and programs in Windows Vista are particularly helpful to people with visual difficulties, hearing loss, pain in their hands or arms, or reasoning and cognitive issues.

Major accessibility improvements in Windows Vista include

Ease of Access Center

The new Ease of Access Center in Windows Vista provides a convenient, centralized place to locate accessibility settings and programs to make your computer easier to use. The Ease of Access Center includes quick access to common tools, a questionnaire to get recommendations for accessibility settings and tools, and the ability to explore all accessibility settings in seven categories. The Ease of Access Center can be found in the Control Panel in Windows Vista or by selecting Windows logo key+U. The Ease of Access icon is also available when you are logging into Windows Vista. The Ease of Access Center replaces the Accessibility Wizard and Utilities Manager in previous versions of Windows.

Gain quick access to common tools
Start Narrator, Magnifier, On-Screen Keyboard, and High Contrast quickly from Quick access to common tools in the Ease of Access Center. When you start these tools from the Quick Access section, the tools will turn off after you log off or shut down. If you want these tools to start automatically every time you log on, turn them on under the Explore all settings categories.

Get recommendations for settings
The Ease of Access Center includes a new, optional questionnaire (that replaces the Accessibility Wizard found in previous versions of Windows). Based on your answers, a custom list of recommended accessibility settings is provided so you can choose which options you want to try. You can take this questionnaire and adjust your settings as often as you like. This new questionnaire takes the guesswork out of selecting settings.

The questionnaire includes questions about performing routine tasks, such as whether you have trouble seeing faces or text on TV, hearing normal conversations, or using a pen or pencil. Based on your answers, Windows Vista provides a personalized recommendation of the accessibility settings and programs that are likely to improve your ability to see, hear, and use your computer.

The questionnaire asks questions that relate to:

Eyesight

Dexterity

Hearing

Speech

Reasoning tasks

You can find the questionnaire in the Ease of Access Center (in the Control Panel) by selecting Get recommendations for settings.

Explore all settings by category
Instead of looking for accessibility settings in various places on your computer, Windows Vista brings all those settings together and organizes them into categories that you can explore in the Ease of Access Center.

You can explore seven different categories of accessibility settings and programs:

Use the computer without a display.

Make the computer easier to see.

Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard.

Make the mouse easier to use.

Make the keyboard easier to use.

Use text or visual alternatives for sounds.

Make it easier to focus on tasks.

Make things on the screen larger with Magnifier
Magnifier is a magnification program in Windows Vista that enables you to enlarge a portion of your computer screen in a separate window to make it easier to see. The magnification quality has improved from previous versions. Now you can choose magnification levels up to 16 times the original size, and you can choose to track the mouse, the keyboard, or text editing.

In Magnifier, you can choose to:

Invert the colors for better screen legibility.

Move the Magnifier window anywhere on your screen.

Choose a docking position which places the magnifier window at the left, top, right, or bottom of your screen.

Adjust the tracking focus so that it follows the movement of the mouse cursor, keyboard focus, or text editing.

You can find Magnifier in the Ease of Access Center.

Hear text read aloud with Narrator
Narrator is the text-to-speech program in Windows Vista that reads what is displayed on your screen, including the contents of the active window, menu options, or the text you have typed. Narrator reads menus without leaving the active window and includes a pleasant, natural-sounding voice.

Narrator has a number of options that allow you to customize the way screen elements are read. You can:

Read Narrator menus without leaving the active window.

Move around the desktop with the number keys using virtual focus, which allows you to move through the objects on the desktop and read aloud any content they contain.

Move around the desktop with the arrow keys using virtual menus.

Use bookmarks to find commonly used programs.

You can choose the type of text Narrator reads aloud, such as keystrokes, system messages, and scroll notifications, and you can choose voice settings. Plus, Narrator is compatible with any SAPI-compliant voice for users who can use a different voice.

You can find Narrator in the Ease of Access Center.

Narrator will read aloud what is on your screen.

Type with On-Screen Keyboard
On-Screen Keyboard in Windows Vista displays a visual keyboard with all of the standard keys on the screen. Instead of relying on the physical keyboard to type, you can select keys using the mouse or another pointing device, a small group of keys, or just one key. Several keyboard layouts are available in On-Screen Keyboard, and views are available to promote faster typing or to give access to the maximum number of keys. You can choose the typing mode that works best for you—clicking mode, hovering mode, or scanning mode. To make the On-Screen Keyboard keys easier to see, you can change the font, font style, and font size from the Settings menu.

You can find On-Screen Keyboard in the Ease of Access Center.

On-Screen Keyboard in Windows Vista displays a visual keyboard with all of the standard keys on the screen.

Interact with your PC by voice using Speech Recognition
Speech Recognition in Windows Vista empowers you to interact with your computer by voice, significantly reducing the use of a mouse and keyboard, while maintaining or increasing your overall productivity. Speech Recognition is particularly useful for people who have difficulty with dexterity or have limited use of their hands and arms, because it reduces or eliminates their need for a mouse and a keyboard while enabling them to maintain or increase their productivity.

With Speech Recognition, you can dictate documents and e-mail, fill out forms on the web, and command applications and the operating system by saying what you see. Right from the beginning, you are guided through an easy setup process and an interactive training application that will familiarize you with the voice commands. Whether it is starting an application, selecting a word, or correcting a sentence, you are always in control and guided toward a list of smart choices.

Speech Recognition is fully integrated into Windows Vista and is built on top of the latest Microsoft speech technologies. It features state-of-the-art voice recognition accuracy that is designed to improve as people use it, adapting to their speaking style and vocabulary.

You can find Speech Recognition in the Control Panel of Windows Vista.

Speech Recognition in Windows Vista empowers you to interact with your computer by voice.

Accessibility features in Windows Vista

Feature
Brief description

Ease of Access Center
Provides a centralized location where you can adjust accessibility settings and manage accessibility programs.

Speech Recognition
Enables you to interact with your computer using only your voice while maintaining, or even increasing, your productivity.

Magnifier
Enlarges part of the screen while you work, leaving the rest of your desktop in a standard display.

Narrator
A text-to-speech program that reads aloud on-screen text and describes some events (such as error messages) that happen while youre using the computer.

On-Screen Keyboard
A visual, on-screen keyboard with all the standard keys that you can use instead of a physical keyboard. On-Screen Keyboard also lets you type using an alternative input device.

Keyboard shortcuts
Use keyboard shortcuts as an alternative to the mouse. Keyboard shortcuts can be found in the menus of programs, or, if a letter is underlined on a menu, it usually means that pressing the ALT key in combination with the underlined key has the same effect as clicking that menu item.

Mouse Keys
Instead of using the mouse, you can use the arrow keys on the numeric keypad to move the pointer.

Sticky Keys
Instead of having to press three keys at once (such as when you must press the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys simultaneously to log on to Windows), you can press one key at a time when Sticky Keys is turned on.

Filter Keys
Ignore keystrokes that occur in rapid succession and keystrokes that are held down for several seconds unintentionally.

Visual Notifications
Replace system sounds with visual cues, such as a flash on the screen, so system alerts are announced with visual notifications instead of sounds.

Captions
Get information via animations and video that some programs use to indicate that activity is happening on your computer.

Pros: None that come to mind.

Cons: Lets say there is a lot.

Summary: Vista has an 11GB install size, compared to 2GB with XP it should be 5 times better or more secure right? Wrong. Vista is really the worst thing since ME. I dont know about you, but I like to try out new software every once and a while. When I tried to do just that, Vistas new brain child - UAC(User Access Control) pops up everytime and asks me whether or not I want to continue. I tried to find the fastest way to disable it. It took me an hour of searching Google and MSDN where they hid the answer very well, to try to find out how to disable this annoyance. Once I found out how and disabled it, half of the software I tryed to install did not work. Then once I had all my software intalled and was ready to give Vista a fair evaluation, I found myself saying wow this looks exactly like XP with a Vista Theme on it. After a closer examination I found exactly that, Windows XP Core, Vista Theme. 11GB of fluff. Windows Update took away a need for ever having a new OS but as all companies do, MS needs more money and we need our toys, and so Vista was born.
