 Loktak Lake in Manipur
Loktak Lake is a large fresh water lake in India. It is located near Moirang in Manipur and is 39 kilometer away from the capital city Imphal. The lake covers about 287 square kilometers of wet land and it is a rare ecosystem in India. This lake is also known as Floating Lake due to its floating Phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matters at various stages of decomposition). There are estimated about 116 species of birds including 21 species of migratory waterfowl in the lake. About 425 species of animals including some rare animals such as Indian Python, Sambhar and Barking Deer are also found around this lake. The Keibul Lamjo National Park, which is the last refuge of the endangered Sangai is situated in the south eastern shores of this lake.
