Madikeri is a town located in the Kodagu district in the state of Karnataka in India. Madikeri was also called as Mercara in the olden times mostly by the British when they rled over the area. Mudduraja was a king who ruled over Kodagu area from 1633 - 1687. He built the Madikeri Fort in the last quarter of the 17th century along with a palace inside the fort. Madikeri Fort was later rebuilt by Tipu Sultan, who named the place as Jaffarabad. Doddavira Rajendra took over of the fort in the iear 1790 and then came the british who added to the fort in 1834. Lingarajendra Wodeyar II renovated the palace in 1812-1814. In the north-east corner, at the entrance of the Madikeri Fort, are two life size masonry elephants. A church is present in the south-east corner of the Fort. The other places to visit inside th Fort are Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, the Kote Maha Ganapathi temple and the district prison.
How to Reach Madikeri Madikeri lies on the State Highway 88 which runs from Mysore to Mangalore. Madikeri is somewhat equidistant from Mangalore and Mysore. From Bangalore you can take the state highway 17 and take a slight deviation just after Srirangapatna and join the State highway 88 which goes to Madikeri. You will be travelling for about 252 kilometers to reach Madikeri from Bangalore. The nearby towns are Hassan at about 115 kilomters in Karnataka and Thalassery andKannur from the Kerala state both at about 114 kilometers away. The nearest railway stations to madikeri are Hassan, Kasaragod, Kannur and Thalassery. You can also travel to Mysore and Mangalore to go to Madikeri. From there you can get cabs and bus transport to reach Madikeri.
