Author Shayne McGuire is the director of global research for the Texas teachers' retirement system. He posits an economic crisis is at hand—a pretty solid idea, in my opinion—with failures and disasters across multiple areas of the economy. And his solution is to go long—invest in the one material that always survives economic crunches.
He starts off with a pretty scary look at where we are now: U.S. debt has grown to more than 300 percent of the gross domestic product, last seen in the 1930s when banks were collapsing; Americans, as of December 2005 that every fulltime worker in the country owes $375,000, as part of the federal government's obligations; we are increasingly dependent on foreigners for financing and for rescue of our economy; the real estate market, where many Americans have most of their assets, is in free fall; the country consumes 6 percent more than it produces; the dollar is in danger of collapse. Millions of Baby Boomers are on their way to collect from Social Security. And so on..
